I have been to the Kealakekua ecstatic dance a couple times. This dance is held in a beautiful space with a raised dance floor. The dance is deejayed and there are pillows for still moments and instruments for movers to experiment with. I love that the community holds this space in such a sacred way. There is an abundance of community love and support that is evident the moment you enter the door. The floor is spacious and the times I've been there they have had between ten and twenty dancers that come and go as they need to. Children are welcome and were present at both dances I attended. The facilitator starts with a warm-up of diverse music and then brings everyone together in a brief welcoming circle. Then, there is another hour of music to dance to in a self-guided way. The closing circle is an invitation to share experiences and community information. It is a great time to share and network briefly. The closing circle takes different amounts of time, however, there is no pressure to stay if you need to go. I noticed that some people skip the closing circle if they really need to get out on time. I've had sweet dances at Kealakekua both times, there is no pressure to dance in any particular way, and the community is open to dancing with you. I've found myself introducing new movement and stillness to my dance, spending time on a yoga ball and simply sitting in witness, as well as letting the vibration of instruments take me on an enjoyable dance journey each time!
